The surplus Leopard 2 MBTs supplied by the Swiss Army are rebuilt and given the shape of multifunction armoured engineer vehicle. Kodiak was initially considered to be based on the Leopard 1 MBT but, after in-depth study, the Leopard 2 was found to be more suitable to be converted into an AEV. The two countries concluded a contract with Rheinmetall Landsysteme in January 2008. The Netherlands later expressed interest and the go-ahead was given by the government in December 2007. Denmark pulled out of the project before the final negotiations. Negotiations between the two countries, however, broke down in December 2001 because of the latter’s inability to pay the required additional funding.Ī fresh collaboration was started between Switzerland and Denmark in 2002 and a prototype was developed by Switzerland and Rheinmetall Landsysteme in 2003. The Netherlands, Denmark, Spain and Switzerland were seen as the potential partners for the collaboration.Ĭollaboration between Switzerland and Sweden reached a phase where an offer could be made for production. The Kodiak development project started taking shape in 1999, when the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration, FMV, was asked to secure an armoured engineer vehicle. The AEV3 Kodiak vehicle was showcased at the IDEX 2017 international defence exhibition and conference held in February 2017.
